Can I get AI meeting notes without uploading the audio?

Grux OS 1.2.1 · last checked 2026-09-13 · generated from the shipping release

Yes, and on a modern Mac there is no quality reason not to. Grux OS records the microphone and the system audio separately, transcribes both on device with WhisperKit, tells the speakers apart locally, and files the transcript. The recording never leaves the machine, and no bot dials into your call, so the other participants see a normal meeting rather than a stranger in the attendee list. The cost is two macOS permissions instead of one: Microphone captures your side and System audio capture captures theirs, and a tool that asks for only the first will silently produce a transcript of half the conversation. Summarising the transcript afterwards is a separate step that uses whichever model you configured, hosted or local.

Why two permissions, not one

Your microphone captures you. It does not capture the audio macOS is playing out of the speakers, which is everyone else on the call. Those are different system capabilities with different prompts, and capturing both is what makes a transcript a record of a conversation rather than a record of you talking.

The uploading question, precisely

Setup, once

Meetings needs both permissions, a speech model downloaded, and a recording consent step acknowledged before it will record anything. It refuses to start rather than starting quietly, which is the correct direction for a feature that records people.

The part to be clear eyed about

Recording a conversation is a legal question in some places and a courtesy question everywhere. Grux OS makes you acknowledge that once during setup and then gets out of the way. It does not check your jurisdiction for you and it does not tell the other participants. That is yours.

Questions

Does Grux OS upload meeting audio?
No. Recording and transcription happen on device with WhisperKit and the audio does not leave the machine.
Does a bot join my call?
No. Grux OS captures the audio your Mac is already playing and recording, so nothing appears in the participant list.
Can it tell speakers apart?
Yes, on device. The Speakers surface names the voices once and reuses the names.
